Set in the heart of Singapore’s downtown Civic District, the prestigious Capitol development integrates new21st-century architecture and urban planning withthree heritage buildings to create a civic centre thatis respectful of the past and celebrates the future.
Working in collaboration with the architects Richard Meier & Partners and Architects 61, we designed and delivered the landscape and public realm which has been was carefully transformed into a mixed-use development integrating the historic buildings with a new civic plaza, galleria, retail mall and residential towers and podium gardens. The vision was to create a unique mix of the traditional and the innovative, where history, culture, living, retail and entertainment converge.
The new main civic space is unique to Singapore and is intended to be an experience that is both refined in the day and magical at night. It is respectful of the heritage context and encapsulates spaces for events, performance, peace, nature, exhibition, recreation and relaxation. On the upper podium levels for the Eden Residences, a series of themed roof gardens have been created including a series of pools, a Reflexology Garden with a sensory barefoot trail, a Scented Walk and a Ginger Garden.
The development comprises the Eden Residences Capitol, a luxury hotel The Capitol Kempinski Hotel, premier lifestyle retail and dining destination Capitol Piazza, and the iconic heritage Capitol Theatre. Conservation works included the restoration of Capitol Building and Stamford House, and the restoration of the Capitol Theatre heritage. Sensitive new insertions using modern-day materials and technology, emphasising lightness, transparency and precision assembly, create a strong juxtaposition of old and new, contributing to a rich architectural and landscape experience.
